What is a heat pump water heater?
A heat pump water heater is a boiler that produces domestic hot water by harnessing the warmth in the air, instead of heating it only with an electric element or a gas burner. A small heat pump transfers energy from the air to the water held in the storage tank, using far less electricity for the same amount of hot water. It's one of the most efficient and green solutions for home hot water production.
How many litres of storage to choose?
Tank capacity is chosen according to the number of people in the home and consumption habits:
- Up to 80 litres: one or two people with modest use.
- From 100 to 150 litres: the most common choice for a family of two to four people.
- 200 litres and above: large families or homes with several bathrooms and high consumption.
A well-sized tank avoids running out of hot water and lets the heat pump operate during the most cost-effective hours.
The COP and the savings over electric and gas
The efficiency of a heat pump water heater is measured by the COP, the coefficient of performance: it indicates how much thermal energy is produced for each unit of electrical energy absorbed. With a high COP, the appliance returns several times the energy it consumes, whereas a traditional electric water heater stays close to one. The result is a significant saving on the bill compared with the electric water heater, and in many cases with gas too, especially where tariffs are high.
Energy class and consumption
These appliances reach high energy classes precisely thanks to heat pump technology, which sharply reduces consumption compared with traditional boilers. A high energy class means lower consumption across the year and a faster payback on the initial investment, which in our catalogue starts at around 959 euro.
Tax incentives and grants
Buying and installing a heat pump water heater may qualify for the tax benefits set out in the regulations, such as tax incentives where applicable, such as reduced VAT for renovation work, since it is an energy-efficiency upgrade. The conditions depend on the type of work and the documentation, so it's worth checking the current requirements before you buy.
The best brands available
You'll find the leading manufacturers in the sector, with official warranty and spare parts available: Ariston, Ferroli, Vaillant, Immergas, Riello, Baxi and Daikin. The solutions cover every storage need and budget, up to around 3090 euro for the highest-capacity models.
