What is a fan coil unit?
The fan coil is a hydronic terminal that exchanges heat between the system water and the room air. Inside, a coil carrying the water and a fan distribute warm or cool air quickly and evenly. Unlike a traditional air conditioner, it does not work with refrigerant gas in the room, but with hot or cold water produced by a central generator.
How it works with hot and cold water
In winter hot water flows through the coil and the fan coil heats the room, while in summer cold water flows through it and the unit cools and dehumidifies. The same terminal therefore handles both seasons, provided the system can supply both hot and cold water. It is this versatility that makes the fan coil the heart of many modern heating and cooling systems.
Why it pairs with a heat pump
The most efficient pairing is the one between the fan coil and a heat pump: the generator produces low-temperature water for heating and cold water for cooling, and the fan coil turns it into immediate comfort. This way a single system covers the whole year. Alternatively, for heating only, the fan coil also pairs with a condensing boiler.
The types of fan coil
- Wall-mounted: similar to a split, easy to install in already finished rooms.
- Floor-standing: with a casing, handy when replacing radiators.
- Recessed ceiling: hidden in the false ceiling, leaving only the grille visible.
- Cassette: recessed into the ceiling, with air distribution on several sides.
- Without casing: for installations inside recesses or false ceilings.
If you are looking for the invisible version, discover the recessed ceiling fan coils.
Advantages over other terminals
Compared with radiators, the fan coil heats far more quickly and, above all, can also cool. Compared with direct-expansion air conditioners, it works with a central water system, better suited when heat and cold come from a single heat pump serving the whole home. For air treatment in a single room only, wall-mounted air conditioners remain a valid choice too.
